What is Armageddon?

Our nation is no stranger to war. You or someone you know may have served in one of the many wars and conflicts the United States has been involved in since our founding — a result of the Revolutionary War.

Countless numbers have suffered injuries, been declared missing, or died in these fights. But those wars will look like a child's GI Joe battle compared to the war that is coming … the war the Bible callsArmageddon, or "Mount of Slaughter" (Revelation 16:16).

Where will the war take place?
Though it will be fought throughout the entire land of Israel, the battle will be centralized on the plains of Megiddo, a locale with a long history of bloodshed. The Bible describes several wars fought by Israel at Megiddo, and the history books tell of many others — from the Greeks to the Crusaders to World War I.

Why here?
Napoleon, one of the world's greatest military figures, said it best as he surveyed the grounds of Megiddo before a battle: "All the armies of the world could maneuver their forces on this vast plain …There is no place in the whole world more suited for war than this."

How does this fit into God's "big picture"?
  1. Judgment upon Israel. This battle will reflect God's divine indignation with His chosen people, who have rejected their Messiah and (time and again) have failed to heed God's correction. It will be "the time of Jacob's trouble" (Jeremiah 30:7).
  2. Judgment upon the nations that persecuted Israel. Nations who have persecuted Israel will all be gathered together at this battle, giving God the perfect opportunity to deal with them once and for all (Joel 3:2).
  3. Judgment on the nations that rejected God. This is the time when the Lord will unleash the judgment He has been storing up against the world's wicked nations, the ones who dismissed Him in pursuit of ungodly goals (Revelation 19:15).
And preparations for this war are underway right now throughout the world. The chess pieces of this final battle are quickly moving into position … It won't be long.

But you and I can take comfort in this: the Rapture must take place first.

The great evacuation of believers will take followers of Christ safely to heaven with Him. The judgment of Armageddon is not meant for us, but for those who have rejected the Lord and persecuted His people Israel.
